Plastic-Free July Challenge #14: Put your food waste in the compost 🍌

Updated: Jul 22, 2020

Compost waste bin

Yesterday we showed you how to make your own DIY compost bin liner. Let's now put those to good use!

What are the benefits of composting?

Composting helps prevent erosion. Composts are proven to reduce erosion on hills, near water, the side of the road, and even in playing fields.

In addition, it reduces pollution and toxins. Composting keeps landfills free from organic matter that result to the reduction of methane production.Composting prevents the spread of toxic matters in soils such as pesticides and fuels. This results to not just healthier soil but also healthier plants and water in the area (Source:4 Waste Garden Bags Brisbane).

Composting reduces greenhouse gases by preventing methane generation in landfills, storing carbon in the compost product, reducing energy use for water pumping, substituting for energy-intensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides, improving the soil’s ability to store carbon, and improving plant growth and thus carbon sequestration.

Compost encourages the production of beneficial microorganisms, which break down organic matter to create a rich nutrient-filled material called humus. Compost is a value-added product with many markets, including land reclamation, silviculture, horticulture, landscaping, and soil erosion control. Compost increases the nutrient content in soils (ILSR, Benefits of Composting).
